Flirc Case Review: An Excellent Case for Your Raspberry Pi
Protecting your Raspberry Pi is essential and making it look cool is the icing on the cake (or pi in this case). Today, we take a look at the popular Flirc case that everyone is talking about. We'll cover what makes this stylish case so cool by checking out various features such as dimensions, material, port slots, and more. So get ready and prepare yourself for one of the coolest Raspberry Pi accessories we've ever seen.
The basics
When we first saw the Flirc case, we instantly loved it. Who wouldn't love a case that looks like it's from the future? With its sleek design and solid construction it could easily be mistaken for a spaceship. Whether it's of this earth or from outer space, we still don't know. However, just by looking at it, we can tell that a lot of thought and passion was put into the design.
The Flirc case measures in at 0.80 x 0.44 x 1.60 (that's Length x Height x Width), and weighs in at only 4 ounces. That's small enough and lightweight enough to carry in your pocket, or to take along with you on long trips without worrying about taking up too much space. One of the main purposes of the Raspberry Pi, is to make computing portable and the Flirc case helps with this concept.
The design
As expected, there are slots for each of the Raspberry Pi connectors, such as the USB ports, LAN port, HDMI interface, 3.5mm headphone jack, and of course the micro USB power port. The Flirc case also has a rare but useful feature that most other cases don't have - GPIO pin access! The case has a slot on the bottom which allows access to the GPIO pins. However, we would have preferred the slot to be on the side of the case, but just having a slot for the GPIO pins is great.
In addition to the features above, the case also provides easy access to the microSD card slot on the bottom of the Raspberry Pi. This feature alone is one of the most important features that a case should have. Some cases require disassembly of the case to access the card slot, which is very inconvenient to say the least.
We also love the engraved Flirc logo on the case itself, which adds an extra touch of class!
The material
Many of the Chinese cases you find on Amazon are cheap 3D printed plastic, which looks, smells, and feels terrible. However, the Flirc case is made of smooth high quality aluminum, and the lid or top of the case is made of plastic. There's a reason why they made this case using aluminum, which is actually quite clever. Aluminum makes an excellent heatsink that absorbs unwanted heat. So basically, in effect, the Flirc case is actually a heatsink too. The surface area of the case allows the heat to be dissipated quickly and efficiently. The case also has some ventilation slots to help keep the Raspberry Pi even cooler yet.
What's Included
- The Flirc case (obviously)
- Rubber feet (attached)
- Thermal pad
- 4 screws
Compatibility
The Flirc case supports the Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 3B+, Raspberry Pi 3, Raspberry Pi 2, and the Raspberry Pi B+.
Final thoughts
All in all, the Flirc case is an excellent choice for the Raspberry Pi enthusiast. The quality is outstanding, the aesthetics are impressive, and the price is good too. The last time we checked, the price of this case was $15.95, which in our opinion is well worth it. A small investment to protect your Raspberry Pi is a smart move.
